I went to Haverford College for my B.A. and to Wharton for my M.B.A. I have been involved in applying scientific methodology to stock market investing for my entire career. I was President of Sharpe-Tint, an asset allocation company I formed with William F. Sharpe, who earned the Nobel Prize in Economics during our partnership. I retired from my last full time job as US CEO and Vice Chairman of Barclays Global Investors in 2000. It has since been merged with Blackrock, but remains the largest investment management company in the world. In my post-retirement life, I am Chairman of Quantal International, a provider of quantitative investment technology to investment companies, and Chairman of the Knowles Teacher Initiative, a charitable foundation dedicated to improving the number and quality of high school science teachers. These are part-time gigs that hopefully serve to keep the juices flowing. I am married, with three children in their 30s, and just relocated to Camas, WA, just across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon.
I had a research grant to do scientific research during my junior year, which Joe Schmuckler had obtained for me. He agreed to allow me to work on it during chemistry class as I had a pretty good knowledge of the class material. That ended one day when I left a bunsen burner on too long and cause a minor, if noisy, explosion in the back room during class.
